Our IB History HL Paper 3 Europe and the First World War lesson plans help teachers prepare students for the Europe regional studies section of the IBDP History course. This unit focuses on Europe and the First World War from 1871 to 1923, covering the changing balance of power, German foreign policy, the causes of the war, the defeat of the Central Powers, the impact of the war on Europe and the Paris Peace Treaties.
Students examine the conditions that shaped Europe before 1914, including imperial expansion, the Congress of Berlin, the decline of the Ottoman Empire, the alliance system, Weltpolitik, nationalism, militarism and diplomatic crises. The lessons help students understand how long-term tensions and short-term decisions contributed to the outbreak of the First World War.
The unit also explores key wartime developments, including military strategy, the Schlieffen Plan, technology and weapons, mobilisation of the home fronts, the entry of the United States and the reasons for the defeat of Germany and the other Central Powers. Students consider the role of economic, military, technological and political factors in shaping the outcome of the conflict.
The later lessons focus on the impact of the First World War to 1923, including social and economic effects, the experiences of women and the consequences of the war for different groups in Europe. Students also examine the aims of the peacemakers, the Treaty of Versailles and the wider Paris Peace Treaties, including St Germain, Neuilly, Trianon, Sèvres and Lausanne.
The resources include worksheets, PowerPoints, source activities, timeline tasks, research activities, revision materials and essay-planning tasks. These lessons are designed to support historical inquiry, content knowledge and Paper 3 essay preparation by helping students explain causes and consequences, evaluate different factors and build clear, evidence-based historical arguments.
These IB History HL Paper 3 Europe and the First World War lesson plans are useful for teachers who want ready-to-use classroom resources aligned with the 2026 IBDP History guide and the Europe regional study on the First World War.
