Economic Devastation and Mass Displacement after the Second World War
In 1945, Europe faced widespread economic collapse after six years of total war. Cities such as Warsaw, Hamburg and Dresden lay in ruins. Transport systems had broken down, food production had fallen sharply, and millions were left without homes or employment. For many civilians, the choice was not political but economic survival. This lesson focuses on how housing destruction, food shortages, infrastructure breakdown and economic collapse created the conditions that forced millions to move across Europe.
