Focused Study 4: Conflict and Displacement is part of the IB DP History Paper 1 syllabus (first examinations 2028). This resource library provides IB History teachers with lesson materials and classroom resources designed to support teaching the Conflict and Displacement focused study.
The topic examines how war, political change, and persecution forced millions of people from their homes during the twentieth century. Students investigate the causes of mass displacement, the national and international responses to refugee crises, and how displacement was experienced by different groups.
Resources in this section are organised around the two required IB History Paper 1 case studies:
Post-war displacement in Europe (1945–1960)
Students examine how the end of the Second World War created large refugee movements across Europe. Topics include combat operations and Allied victory, persecution and fear of reprisals, economic pressures, and the creation of displaced persons camps. Students also explore the role of organisations such as UNRRA, the International Refugee Organization (IRO), and the International Red Cross in assisting displaced populations.
Indochina refugee crisis (1975–1990)
Students investigate displacement following the end of the Vietnam War. This includes refugee movements from Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos, the experiences of groups such as the Hoa, Montagnards, Cham, and Hmong, and the international response led by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), including the Orderly Departure Program (1979).
