Re-education Camps, Hoa Persecution and Economic Pressures student worksheet examines why Vietnamese displacement increased after reunification in 1976. As the Socialist Republic of Vietnam extended political and economic control across the former South, former officials and military personnel feared detention in re-education camps. Hoa communities faced growing insecurity as private businesses were taken over and relations between Vietnam and China deteriorated. Economic hardship and relocation placed further pressure on families deciding whether they could remain safely in Vietnam.
