Lessons on Japan (1912–1990)

This series of lessons explores Japan’s transformation from the post-Meiji period to its emergence as an economic powerhouse by the late 20th century. Students will examine the nation’s shifting political landscape, the rise of militarism, its expansionist policies in Asia and the Pacific, and the impact of defeat in World War II. The lessons also focus on post-war reconstruction, US occupation, and the factors behind Japan’s rapid economic growth. Each lesson is designed to support IB Higher Level History students, providing in-depth analysis, source evaluation, and critical thinking exercises aligned with Paper 3 requirements.

The course begins with an analysis of Japan’s political evolution after the Meiji era, assessing the challenges faced by its early parliamentary system. The impact of World War I and the post-war settlements, including the Paris Peace Conference in 1919 and the Washington Naval Conference of 1921–1922, are explored to understand Japan’s role in international diplomacy. This period also saw the emergence of Taisho democracy, marked by the growth of liberal values and the two-party system, which ultimately failed to establish lasting democratic governance.

Attention then shifts to the rise of militarism and extreme nationalism, which gradually eroded civilian control over government. The increasing influence of the military, political coups, and assassinations led to Japan’s aggressive foreign policy, culminating in the invasions of Manchuria in 1931 and China in 1937. Students will assess how these events affected Japan’s relations with Western powers and led to strategic alliances such as the Tripartite Pact of 1940. The US embargo on Japan in the same year further heightened tensions, pushing Japan toward conflict.

Japan’s role in the Pacific War (1941–1945) is studied through its decision to attack Pearl Harbor, initial military successes, and the eventual reasons for its defeat. The consequences of Japan’s surrender in 1945 set the stage for a detailed exploration of the US occupation (1945–1952), focusing on the social, political, and cultural reforms imposed by the Americans. The shift in US policy, known as the “reverse course” in 1950, is analysed to understand how Cold War dynamics influenced Japan’s post-war recovery.

The final section explores the reasons behind Japan’s “economic miracle,” assessing the role of government policies, international support, and domestic innovation in driving rapid economic growth. The impact of globalisation on Japan’s economy, society, and culture is also evaluated, highlighting the nation’s transformation into a global economic leader by the late 20th century.

These lessons provide students with a comprehensive understanding of Japan’s historical trajectory from empire to economic superpower, equipping them with the analytical skills needed to engage with complex historical debates and exam-style assessments.
