Lessons on Russian Revolution

The October 1917 Russian Revolution could be argued as the most important event in the 20th Century. The revolution led to the creation of the world’s first Communist state. From the beginning, Communist Russia terrified countries in the West with its new ideology and worldview. The United States of America and the governments of Western Europe, saw Communism as a virus that could, if unchecked, infect countries across the globe, including their own. The fear of communism impacted the internal and foreign policies of a number of countries. Hitler used this fear of communism as a tool to gain power in Germany. One could argue that this is why many Western European governments were unwilling to stop the aggressive Nazi rearmament programme. They saw a strong Germany as a buffer between them and Communist Russia.

When World War II ended, the Soviet Union emerged as a superpower competing with the United States for influence in the post-1945 world. The era of the Cold War began. The spying, propaganda, and interference in the affairs of other countries, nearly brought the world to the point of self destruction.
