Who were the ancient Romans and why were they so powerful? Ancient Rome grew from a small town on central Italy’s Tiber River at the beginning of the 8th century B.C. At its peak, the Roman Empire included most of continental Europe, Britain, much of western Asia, northern Africa and the Mediterranean islands. Today, we are still influenced by the Romans in our everyday lives. The Roman legacies include a number of languages (Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Romanian) which all created from Latin. The modern Western alphabet and calendar and the emergence of Christianity as a major world religion were all derived during the Roman period.
